Crisis Intervention Training Program or CIT Program pioneered in Memphis Tennessee in response to an incident where the mother of a PMI called for help because his son had been using cocaine and was cutting himself and threatening people. PMI didn’t respond to verbal request and according to police, lunged at the officers, who then shot him multiple times (Rogers et al., 2019, p. 2-3). Different organizations created the model for CIT to reduce fatality. This training is a 40-hour training split into 50% classroom and 50% hands-on training.
In a CIT Training, there is a collaboration between the police officers and the health care professionals specifically psychiatric nurses which allows them to have clear communication, better assessment of quality care, welfare, and safety of both the PMI and the police officers. Police officers in some areas would use a civilian clothing, introduce themselves in a first name basis, using a normal vehicle instead of a police car, and taught how to speak to the PMI in a way where they encourage them to be admitted to a facility or to go to the nearest hospital not in a prison cell.
CIT training may effectively align officers’ knowledge and understanding of mental illness closer to those of mental health professionals, correcting myths and reducing stigmatizing perceptions and attitudes (Horace et al., 2013, p. 4). This will help improving de-escalation skills, communication, and unforeseen incidents where the seriously mental ill person will be considered a threat than a person who is seeking for help.
