Developing Your Essay
Develop a convincing argument that supports a specific position that is expressed clearly in your thesis. You must establish this thesis by the end of your introduction, which should be no longer than five or six sentences. Remain focused on this thesis throughout your essay and support it with clear reasoning, and strong evidence in the form of relevant facts, quotations, and examples from the plays and reliable outside sources. Remember that you are to write a critical argument that answers the above question, not a plot summary or book report. Don’t summarize the plots of the plays. Your readers have read them; they know what happened. Your job is to explain the meaning of what happened by answering the Assignment Question.
Analyzing and Synthesizing Sources
In addition to the primary sources (the texts of the plays), you must use at least four (4) secondary (outside) sources from the school library databases, along with two (2) quotations from Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces for a total of at least five (5) separate secondary sources.
Follow the citation format in the MLA Handbook, Eighth Edition. Your Works Cited list must appear on a separate page as the final page of your essay; it cannot be submitted as a separate document. For example, Act II, Scene 3, lines 184-206, is cited as (2.3.184-206). This documentation style applies only to the print version of Doescher’s play; since the Kindle version does not use line numbers, use only the page numbers in citations. For example, for the Kindle edition of Jedi the Last, Act II, Scene 3, lines 184-206, is cited as (67-68) for pages 67-68. Specify the edition you are using in the Doescher entry in your Works Cited list. However, you must use the print version of the Updated Edition of the Folger Shakespeare Library edition of The Tempest for all quotations and citations (No exceptions!), which means that all internal citations from The Tempest must cite act, scene, and lines using Arabic numerals and periods as illustrated in the previous paragraph. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Any final drafts that do not have internal citations—i.e., within the body of the paper—AND/OR do not have a Works Cited list will receive no more than 64 percent credit, i.e., an “F,” because the writer has failed to fulfill the fundamental research component of the assignment.
