Individual Ethical Responsibility
Overview: Values, morals, and roles: Values are things that have an intrinsic worth in usefulness or importance to the one who holds the value, and those values may become principles, standards, or qualities that are considered worthwhile or desirable. Values are relative, and though many individuals may assign worth to the same thing, each person may have different “levels” of worth for the same thing (e.g., life). In this way, values are “relative” and based on how much worth is assigned by the individual. Moral values that respect or enhance life, such as truth, freedom, charity, honor, etc., have one thing in common. When they are functioning correctly, they protect or enhance life. This week, we will first explore our values, and then we will look at some of the values of public service professionals.
Objective: Understand the underlying values that support ethical theories and behavior. (CO#2)
Readings: read chapter 2 in Pollock (2017) so that you can answer the questions in your post; Read the handout “Philosophical Framework for the Study of Ethics;” Read the instructions for the Moral Characteristics Inventory.

To simplify the study of these ethical theories, and when answering the questions for posts and exams, use the Handout “Philosophical Framework for the study of Ethics,” which is posted in this section. We will only be focused on these four theories for this class. Philosophical Framework or the study of Ethics:
