Japan had been fighting a war against China since 1937 with the goal of expanding its own empire and gaining access to China’s resources. This war was condemned by Britain, France, and the United States. This threatened Japan’s independence causing them to seek new allies. These new allies would be Italy and Germany. They formed a defensive patch with Germany and Italy in order to delay the United States from assisting China. At the time that this patch was being formed Germany was winning the war and taking over Europe. Japan thought that Germany would win the war and take over areas that Japan traded goods with and Japan hoped to control this area themselves. The development of a Japanese-German partnership during World War II was caused due to Japan’s fear of losing its independence.
This argument and topic will be broken down into three to four main points. These points will be each of the reasons that led up to Japan becoming allies with German. I will dive deep into Japan’s war against China, why Japan needed new allies, and why Japan wanted to be on German’s “winning” side of the war.
