Introduction/Rationale: This first essay provides us with the opportunity to being understanding the ways in which people talk and write about literature. By conducting a simple reader response style essay, we begin to see how literature affects us and the world we live in. Additionally, by making this first essay fairly basic, it helps ease us into the writing process and sets a strong foundation for the rest of the semester. Reader Response Theory suggests that in many ways, the meaning of a text is limited to the reading experience of it’s audience. Some believe, in fact, that the text itself is devoid of any meaning outside of this experience. As we all know, our world, our lives, our thoughts and feelings, are all predicated on our past experiences. Therefore, when reading a text, all of who we are comes forth and informs our reading experience. It’s why we can have these great conversations about literature — because we all bring something different to the table, and most literature affords us this opportunity.
Assignment Prompt: Review the Wikipedia page on Reader Response (Links to an external site.) for a deeper understanding of what this school of theory entails (I suggest skimming through the section on the types of RR). Then write a 6 page response to the texts we have read from the Ancient World period. Below is a list of questions that can be considered as you write. Use them to structure your ideas and provide the organization and development for your essay. The essay should contain a developed introduction in which you share any background information relevant to your response (this can be personally relevant information, information on the time period, etc) and a thesis stating your position (basically, what’s your opinion of the texts and what are you about to write about). Your body sections should contain focused, well-developed body paragraphs that address the fundamentals of Reader Response theory by establishing your opinion of the texts based on your experiences with it (and before it) as well as provide examples from the texts to support what it is you are saying. Finally, you will have a thoughtful conclusion which summarizes your overall feelings on the texts and how you see these texts informing future readings and experiences.
