Before You Begin:
Calculate:
The Formula Mass of: sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3 (also known as sodium hydrogen carbonate)
The Molar Mass (“MM”) of carbon dioxide, CO2 
QUESTION: What distinguishes “Formula Mass” from “Molar Mass”?
I will work with you to complete the PRE-LAB exercise on Page 211.  You will turn this in as part of your lab.
NOTE: The chemical equation you select based on the NaHCO3 : CO2 mole ratio is not necessarily the one that is actually in the experiment!
In the CHEM& 140 Workbook, 2020 edition:
The “Stoichiometric Analysis of an Antacid”, pp 203-212 (listed as “Experiment 8”)
Lab 04 – “Stoichiometry of an Antacid”
Part A:
Empirically determine the correct balanced chemical equation for the reaction of NaHCO3(s) with CH3COOH(aq) to produce CO2(g).
Part B:
Using the correct chemical equation from Part A, calculate the amount of NaHCO3(s) contained in an average Alka Seltzer tablet.  The “actual” mass value, in mg, is shown on the back side of the package.
Additionally: Calculate the % error difference between your results and the mg sodium bicarbonate listed on the back of the package.  The “experimental” or “empirical” value is what you calculated in the experiment; the “actual” or “true” value is what’s listed on the back of the package.
NOTE: to calculate the correct number of moles of CO2(g), remember that some of it has dissolved in the acetic acid solution.  See the NOTE that appears after the “REACTION STOICHIOMETRY” table on p. 303.
